The 5 Most Beautiful Trails around Montaretto

5 trails · All levels · 5 to 40 min

Montaretto is an extraordinary starting point for walkers. Nestled among vineyards, olive groves and maritime pine forests, the village offers trails for every level — from short strolls to the wildest coves on the Ligurian coast, all the way to paths leading deep into the Cinque Terre National Park.

1) Trail #661C — Cala Scà
5 min from the SVA · Easy · Sea · History

Nestled among maritime pines, red rocks and an emerald sea, Cala Scà is one of the wildest and most evocative corners of the Ligurian coast. Small, hidden, almost secret — the kind of place you can hardly believe still exists.

A five-minute detour from the SVA (Sentiero Verde Azzurro) leads directly to the cove. Perfect for swimming in crystal-clear water away from the crowds. A place steeped in history: Turkish pirates landed here in 1560, and during the Second World War it was used by American OSS agents of the Ginny Mission II.

Tip: Best visited early in the morning or late afternoon — the light on the red rocks is spectacular. Bring hiking boots; the final stretch is over bare rock.

2) Trail #660 — Montaretto to Salice
10 min · Easy · Views · Vineyards

The shortest trail but one of the most rewarding. In just 10 minutes from Montaretto you reach Salice, with a breathtaking panoramic view over the Gulf of Genoa. Ideal for those who want to enjoy the sunset without too much effort.

The path winds through the terraced vineyards typical of the area — the very vines that produce the local Vermentino and Bosco of the Colline di Levanto. In autumn, during the harvest, the landscape becomes even more striking.

Tip: Do it at sunset — the view over the Gulf as the sun goes down is not to be missed. Bring something to drink.

3) Trail #661 — Il Salto della Lepre
30 min · Moderate · Views · Nature

One of the most spectacular trails in the area. In 30 minutes from Montaretto you reach the Salto della Lepre, a panoramic headland with a 180° view over the Gulf of Genoa. On clear days you can see as far as Corsica, Monviso and the islands of Gorgona and Capraia.

The path climbs through holm oak and maritime pine forest, with sweeping sections overlooking the sea. A little more demanding than the others, but well within reach of anyone in reasonable shape.

Tip: Equally stunning at dawn — the silence and the low light make the landscape feel almost unreal. Hiking boots essential.

4) Trail #663 + #663C — The Valley of the Mills
15 + 15 min · Easy · History · Nature

A two-stage route combining history and nature. Trail #663C takes you in 15 minutes from Montaretto to the Valley of the Mills, where you'll find restored ancient mills and the Torre degli Ardoino — a medieval watchtower overlooking the stream below.

From there, Trail #663 descends in another 15 minutes to Bonassola, through cool woodland and along the stream bed. A perfect itinerary for hot summer mornings, when the shade of the forest is especially welcome.

Tip: Best done one way — walk down to Bonassola and take the bus back (June–September). Bring hiking boots.

5) Sentiero Verde Azzurro — From Bonassola to Framura
45 min · Easy · Coast · Views

The Sentiero Verde Azzurro is the most celebrated coastal path in the area. It connects Bonassola to Framura through one of the wildest and most spectacular stretches of the Ligurian coastline, with continuous sea views and walks through fragrant Mediterranean scrub and pine forests.

The most scenic section runs between Framura and Bonassola, where the path hugs the sea at water level, passes close to Cala Scà and offers unique glimpses of the red rocks. Accessible from Montaretto by descending towards Bonassola.

Tip: Combine it with the Maremonti cycle path from Levanto to Framura if you enjoy cycling — a complete experience of sea, pine forests and the scent of wild thyme.

Distances from Montaretto

— Cala Scà · 20 min
— Salice (Trail 660) · 10 min
— Salto della Lepre · 30 min
— Valle dei Mulini · 15 min
— Bonassola · 25 min
— Framura · 35 min
— Cinque Terre · 40 min

The Cinque Terre and Colline di Levanto Wine Road

The Cinque Terre and Colline di Levanto Wine Road

From Montaretto to Riomaggiore — a journey through vines, sea and tradition

Few people know it, but Montaretto sits at the heart of one of Italy's most spectacular and demanding wine-producing territories. The Cinque Terre and Colline di Levanto Wine Road winds through vineyards clinging to vertiginous slopes, accessible only on foot, where the dedication of local wine growers is measured in effort, passion and love for the land.

A landscape unlike any other

The dry-stone terraces (muretti a secco) that shape the Ligurian hillsides are recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Built by hand over centuries, they support vineyards climbing from 50 to 500 metres above sea level, in one of the most scenic wine landscapes in Europe.

Many vineyards can only be reached on foot, at gradients that make any mechanisation impossible. Every bunch is harvested by hand, often carried on the shoulders along steep paths. Extraordinary work that is reflected in the unique character of the wines produced.

The local grape varieties

The three native white grape varieties at the heart of this territory are:

— Bosco — the most widespread, delicate and floral, it forms the backbone of the Cinque Terre DOC
— Vermentino — aromatic and structured, bringing freshness and complexity
— Albarola — the rarest, adding elegance and fragrance to the blend

Blended in varying proportions according to local regulations, they produce the Cinque Terre DOC — a dry, mineral and savoury white wine with a characteristic almond finish — and the legendary Sciacchetrà, a passito made from sun-dried grapes: sweet, amber-coloured and produced in very limited quantities.

The area also produces fine red wines from Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Canaiolo grapes — less well known, but equally rewarding.

The Wine Road — a journey to be savoured slowly

The Cinque Terre and Colline di Levanto Wine Road is a mapped itinerary connecting producers, wineries and tasting venues from Montaretto all the way to Riomaggiore. It is more than a food and wine route — it is an invitation to slow down, to walk among the vines, to meet the producers and understand the story of these extraordinary yet fragile landscapes.

The main stops begin right around Montaretto and Bonassola, heading up towards Levanto and then along the coast to the Cinque Terre.

Tastings and wineries to visit

Along the route you can:

— Visit wineries and join guided tastings
— Buy wines directly from the producers
— Take guided tours through the terraced vineyards
— Take part in the harvest (September–October)
— Discover traditional recipes paired with local wines

When to go

— Spring (April–June) — the vineyards are in bloom and the paths are scented with broom
— Summer (July–August) — intense heat but spectacular sunsets among the vines
— Harvest (September–October) — the most exciting time, with the vineyards in full activity
— Autumn (October–November) — the foliage colours on the terraces are extraordinary

Starting from Montaretto

La Notte sull'Isola sits at the heart of this wine-producing territory. From our apartment you can reach the first vineyards on foot in just a few minutes, follow the CAI trails that wind through the vines, and visit local wineries without ever getting in the car.

A stay in Montaretto is the best way to experience the Wine Road not as a tourist but as a guest — slowly, authentically, one glass at a time.
